Bicycle Safety

Retro Bikes Art Print by Darrell HillREQUIREMENTSBlair Bike Club requires all members wear a bicycle helmet on all rides.  All riders must obey traffic laws.  All riders are required to sign a Club Membership Form, or a temporary form if riding as a non-member.  Non members are certainly encouraged to try out the club!

QUICK TIPS:  We recommend using lights for evening rides or rainy days so drivers are made aware of our presence.  We remind everyone to watch for car doors opening from parked cars.  It's also a good idea to start grabbing your water bottle with your left hand, so if you have to make a fast brake, you can use your back brake (right hand) and avoid an accident!  Also, remember to alert walkers of your presence when riding on a sidewalk or bike trail or passing a fellow rider.  Announcing "Passing on your left!" lets anyone, walking or riding, know your intentions.  Use caution when riding through loose gravel, especially if turning, you can lose traction and control of your bike.  Always ride defensively and cautiously.

CHILD SAFETY TIPS First of all, helmets are a 'must' for children and knee pads are always a good idea also.  Some good rules to instill in young children are "no street riding" and "stop and look both ways before crossing the street".  These may seem obvious but remember children are not always aware of vehicles and perceiving drivers intentions, and drivers don't always see them either.  We live in the day of modern technology with many distractions to drivers like cell phones and even television and computers.
